Dental implants are one of the popular cosmetic dentistry options to replace your missing teeth. The implant is surgically placed into the jawbone by your dentist or an oral surgeon. Dental implants are screw-like parts made from titanium that imitate the function of a tooth root and keep a dental crown in its place.

The Three Phases of the Dental Implant Procedure

A dental implant procedure is usually completed in three-stages. The first phase is about placing the implant. After applying local anesthesia, an incision will be made on your gums and the implant will be surgically screwed into the jawbone. The gums are then closed over the implant using one or two stitches. The gum will be left to heal for three to six months so that the implant securely integrates into the jawbone.

The second phase involves placing the post or abutment on the implant. This phase of the dental implant procedure is carried out only after the gums have healed completely. Another small incision is made in the gums and an abutment is attached to the implant. The abutment protrudes through the gum tissues. The function of an abutment is to secure the dental crown safely in place.
The third and final phase of the dental implant procedure is the crown attachment. In this phase, a customized crown will be attached to the implant post by your dentist.

Doing the dental implant in these three phases allows enough time to check the shape and fit of the finished crown in your mouth. Therefore, a three-phase dental implant is usually recommended by dentists when you have a healthy jawbone to support dental implants.

How Long Does a Dental Implant Procedure Take?

The time needed to complete a dental implant procedure depends on various factors, such as your oral health, whether or not tooth extraction is to be performed before the implant procedure, the number of teeth involved, and their position in your mouth. Generally, a dental implant can take around six to nine months to complete.

Is the Dental Implant Procedure Painful?

As with any surgical procedure, dental implants also have a certain level of discomfort. However, sedation dentistry will help you ease your discomfort. You are given local anesthesia at the time of the implant procedure. Your dental surgeon may also prescribe medications to relieve any pain or discomfort that may occur after the procedure.
